Final Fantasy XI Playdiary

Entry 1 - Adventures in newbieland

After spending hours downloading software updates and trying to set up my Playonline account amongst infinite network errors, I finally got to play FFXI! First there was another delay as the worldpass PiNG had kindly sent me had expired whilst I had been trying to get online and I didn't want to be annoying and ask for another, so I had to continously recreate my character until I got on Ragnarok server. This took several hours and hundreds of characters, most of whom ended up on Pandemonium server. Eventually I got in by chance.

...and some time later, I figured out how to actually take a screenshot. This is me wandering aimlessly through the buildings in Windurst, trying to figure out how to talk to NPCs and perform other actions such as logging off (you don't want to know how long figuring that out took me). The pretty lady to my left is an NPC who was included due to my poor camera control at this stage.

And err, this is me from behind. Not very interesting, but I was so excited at being able to take screenshots I started making random ones everywhere.

A little tarutaru NPC asked me to deliver a letter to his friend and gave me some rough directions. Hours later, I was still running in circles in West Sarutabaruta being chased by tiny insects. I eventually died a gruesome death and ended up back in town at my home point crystal. The quest could wait (note: I finished it the day after).

Woohoo, alive again. For now I decided to explore the town a little more, and perhaps buy some clothes.

This is a terrible and blurred picture but it was the first demonstration of magic I got! I love the NPC names. After harrassing these little guys and some by the gate I was given a mission. I tried to complete it many times but kept dying. I will probably forget about it until I'm at least level 10.

At some point I wandered as far as the residential area and found my very own mog house! I have a little moogle enslaved in there and absolutely no furnishings since I am poor. The moogle can change my job around, but I decided I should work on monk before doing anything crazy for now.

Eventually I went back to Sarutabaruta and did some serious hunting. I must have died ten times or more but I soon got to level 3. I took quite a few shots whilst resting in between battles.

That night I found the auction house. I was too afraid to try it out at this point (I wish I had, I would be less poor now if I hadn't sold my junk to NPCs). Later I would bravely return and sell a wild onion for a staggering 200 gil. Ahh! (Yes, I am really that small compared to the chap beside me :/).

After some more hard work soloing I scraped enough gil to buy some trousers and a robe. I still look like a newbie, but it's a start and I feel more independent already now I'm level 6. I also managed to blink for this shot -.-;

Finally, I'll end with what became a familiar experience to me during my first day in Vana'diel...
