Final Fantasy XI Playdiary
Entry 19 - More snapshots
Once again it's been almost forever since I added an entry to this. I have excuses! I haven't been playing as much as I used to since I've had more distractions in the real world (like a certain someone ^^). The US version of FFXI came out too following a beta test and so I assumed demand for the playdiary would vanish. I'm also just completely lazy. Anyway, due to prodding by some crazy people who apparently read this junk I post, here's some highlights of what I've been up to recently. The next entry will be a little more exciting. I hope.

First of all, a small section on creative names. Or not. Observe the delights of the characters Illlllllll, Lmao and Evil. Actually I think Evil is a cute name. But it's still strange.

And now on to summons. It took me forever to get the summoner job due to a combination of real life work and the fact that as a solo white mage/black mage I could not get that wretched ruby to drop anywhere. I killed so many leeches. I am now an expert on leeches of Vana'diel. The summoner job isn't the most fun so far since I really want the other main summons (especially Garuda...mmm) but summoning Carbuncle and seeing his beautifully animated running made all of the pain getting the quest completed worthwhile. So now be subjected to pictures of my sweet little Carbuncle and everyone else's far cooler summons.

Some of the fun I had running around the world on the summon quest just previously.

More bard fun. I don't think I can get tired of this job. It's earmarked as something to level up when I get sick of white mage (if that ever happens).
With the sudden influx of new players just learning the game and subsequently dying constantly, scenes like this have become more common. This is Buburimu, the area where the guard usually stands to cast signet on travellers and allow them to set their homepoints. Now though, it's controlled by the beast tribes - making hunting in Buburimu and Tahrongi much more difficult for lower levels. It has previously been rare for me to see a beast-controlled area at all so I grabbed a picture of the depressing flag.
One disturbing thing I've noticed since the US version of FFXI came out is that the number of naked mithra running around Vana'diel has multiplied vastly. I can't walk through a single town without running into them. I even found someone hunting nude in Horutoto. It's a little unsettling.
This year's halloween event produced some new items for everyone to enjoy - the trick staff, treat staff, pumpkin head and horror head items. But enough of that, when I saw these two sitting together in Jeuno I couldn't resist taking a picture. How cute!

For the first time in my Vana'diel life, I was riding the ferry between Mhaura and Selbina and came across pirates whilst having space on my HDD to take screenshots of the spectacle. So I did. When pirates attack, the boat's usual serene music changes to a more exciting battle theme and you see a gloomy ship draw close alongside. Summoners take up positions along the side of the ship and start summoning skeletons to attack the ferry. Scary for lower levels who would get swarmed quickly but fun if you're strong enough to take them on.

Unfortunately my delight didn't last long. I hopped back on the boat after reaching port since it was night and I wanted to kill the Phantom monster on it for the spell Icespike for my black mage job. A sound plan as I can take Phantoms down quickly on my own. What I didn't expect though as I ran up onto deck eagerly was that the notorious monster Sea Horror was waiting for me right outside the door. I yelped and ran in the opposite direction for a cowardly warp away but two hits from its tentacles later I was a corpse once more. It seems a tradition for me now to die on the ferry.
Finally - a picture of my spare character. I just use her to hold items for Xylia and generally be a slave so she's level 1. This picture is included because I think she is cute as a button even if nobody else agrees. Her name is Myrii. Yes, this is irrelevant.
